Overview of Magazine Industry

The UK magazine industry is huge, with over 2,600 magazines sold every minute. 80% of women and 67% of men regularly read a magazine, and as country, the UK spends an average of £2billion on magazines every year. There are over 3,300 different magazines in circulation, hundreds of them specifically for music.

For the first half of 2010, the top three magazines with the highest circulations were “Sky” magazines, which are free and posted out automatically to everyone with a Sky Box. The highest commercial magazine was “TV Choice”, with a circulation of 1,309,469. No music magazine featured in the top 50 magazines with the highest circulation in the UK.

According to ABC figures, “Kerrang!” and “RWD” were the only paid for film and music magazines that increased their circulation in the first half of 2010. They increased their circulation by 1.8% and 1.7% respectively. NME faced the biggest cut in its circulation figures, dropping by 17.3%.This shows that many music magazines are failing to hold the interest of their audience.

The average price of a magazine in 2008 was £2.25, with the average price of a music magazine currently falling between £2.00 and £2.50 for a monthly magazine.

There are no magazines that combine fashion, art, politics and music for a female audience; therefore I will use this gap in the market to produce my music magazine.
